PRESS RELEASE
His Excellency Mr. Chandra Kumar Ghimire, Ambassador of Nepal to the United Kingdom, presented his Letter of Credence in the capacity of the Permanent Representative of Nepal to the International Maritime Organization (IMO) to His Excellency Mr. Arsenio Dominguez, Secretary General at the IMO headquarters in London today.
Following the presentation of the credential, Ambassador Ghimire briefly highlighted on Nepal’s maritime interests and expressed the Embassy’s central concern on how Nepal, as a landlocked country, may engage more constructively in the administration of maritime affairs under the auspices of the IMO. He also shared that Nepal, at present, is in the process of ratifying three important international instruments relating to the IMO, namely the Maritime Labour Convention (MLC, 2006), the Seafarers’ Identity Documents Convention (ILO 185, 2003) and the International Convention on Standards of Training, Certification and Watchkeeping for Seafarers (STCW, 1978).
Appreciating Nepal’s drive to ratification of IMO related international conventions, Secretary General Dominguez shared the IMO’s recent engagements and shed lights on how landlocked Member States like Nepal may scale up their contributions and benefits in several ways under the IMO framework.
On the occasion, a separate letter authorizing Mr. Bipin Duwadi, the Deputy Chief of Mission as an Alternate Permanent Representative of Nepal to the IMO was also presented to the Secretary General.
In the credential event, His Excellency Ghimire was accompanied by senior diplomats from the Embassy.
