Press Release

Chargé d'Affaires a.i. and Acting Permanent Representative to the International Maritime Organization (IMO), Mr. Bipin Duwadi, addressed the Thirty-fourth regular session of the IMO General Assembly at the IMO Headquarters in London today.

In his address, Mr. Duwadi underscored that international trade and maritime transport are lifelines of all countries, including the Least Developed Countries (LDCs) and the Land-locked Developing Countries (LLDCs) like Nepal, as they are directly correlated with fostering economic growth, poverty reduction, enhanced competitiveness, and the attainment of the Sustainable Development Goals.

As Nepal prepares for graduation from LDC status by 2026, ‘a smooth, sustainable and irreversible transition hinges on resilient maritime connectivity,’ he said. While reaffirming Nepal’s continued support to the IMO, he solicited the Organization’s support to strengthen Nepal’s maritime governance and enhance technical cooperation, including through the IMO Trust Fund and other initiatives tailored to the country's specific needs.

Aligning with the IMO’s historic and ambitious 2023 strategy of net-zero GHG emissions by or around 2050, Mr. Duwadi also highlighted Nepal’s pledge to the Paris Agreement and the national goal to achieve net-zero emissions by 2045, ahead of the global timeline.

The Thirty-fourth Session of the IMO General Assembly commenced on 24 November 2025 and will continue until 3 December 2025. The Assembly will consider various reports and recommendations, and also elect 40 IMO Council Members under 3 different categories for the term 2026-2027.
