Press Release on the 263rd Nepali Army Day Celebration

On the occasion of the 263rd anniversary of the establishment of the Nepali Army, the Embassy hosted a special ceremony at its premises today.

The ceremony began with the playing of the national anthems of Nepal and the United Kingdom. Major General Carl Boswell CBE of the British Army and Chargé d’Affaires a.i. Mr. Bipin Duwadi jointly lit the traditional oil-fed lamp to inaugurate the ceremony.

Speaking on the occasion, Chargé d’Affaires a.i. Mr. Duwadi recalled the glorious history of the Nepali Army and the significant milestones the Army has achieved for the nation. “From protecting our borders to providing humanitarian assistance during natural disasters, from contributing to the United Nations’ peacekeeping operations to fostering international relations, the Nepali Army has consistently and continuously demonstrated excellence, resilience, and an unshakable sense of duty”, he said. Mr. Duwadi also paid tribute to the brave Nepali army personnel who sacrificed their lives while serving the nation.

Major General Carl Boswell congratulated Nepali Army on the 263rd year of its establishment. In his remarks, he acknowledged the service, sacrifice and professionalism of the Nepali Army, a military institution with a proud history and a global reputation of excellence. Major General Boswell underscored that the UK holds the Nepali Army “in the highest regard” as the two countries share a military relationship “unlike any other”. He also expressed satisfaction on the partnership between the two armies that has continued to grow in recent years through joint training and education, disaster response cooperation, professional exchanges, and through shared commitment to peace, stability and the international rules-based order.

Major General Boswell also stated that the Gurkhas are not just soldiers but are “a living symbol of the deep trust and the friendship” between the two nations.

Earlier, Military Attaché Brigadier General Anup Shah welcomed the guests and thanked them for joining the ceremony. In his remarks, Brigadier General Shah described the professionalism, dedication, and discipline of the Nepali Army. In his presentation, he emphasized major activities and achievements of the Nepali Army covering its contribution to the peacekeeping operations under the auspices of the United Nations, humanitarian and disaster relief efforts, infrastructure development projects, and its broader engagement across civic-military fronts. Video clips showcasing the activities of the Nepali Army also featured throughout the event.

The ceremony was attended by over one hundred guests from various sectors, including high-ranked military officers, London-based Defense Attachés, government officials, military officers, and representatives of the Nepali diaspora in the United Kingdom.
